PASSEY FROM JHANSI

We have been in Jhansi since 1958 and established ourself in Film exhibition business. When we came to Jhansi, the city, was just begining to wake up. We were a part of those who assisted Jhansi in establishing itself and asserting its presence in the social, cultural and the business world. You can read more about our ventures into the business world in another section on this page.

The part of Passey family that reached Jhansi: Janki Nath Passey and his wife Savitri. Surinder Nath Passey, his wife Kamla and their two elder sons -- Arvind and Atul. A third son, Ashok, was born around ten years later. Janki Nath Passey was lovingly known by all in Jhansi as 'Chacha ji'.

Surinder Nath Passey has been the member of Masonic Lodge, Jhansi. He has also been an active member of Lions Club of Jhansi and was President in 1983-84. He also held many eminent posts in the Lions District Cabinet. He is also the senior member of the Jhansi Film Exihibitors Association.

EXPLORE THE FAMILY

Jagan Nath Passey, son of Madho Ram Passey, migrated from Lahore in 1947 to Lucknow along with his two sons: Surinder Nath Passey and Mohinder Nath Passey . He served in the Railway Workshop (Mechanical). His elder son, after graduation, started his career in film exhibition from Babina, then shifted to Jhansi. His younger son took his medical degree from the medical college at Gwalior and joined Irvin Hospital (now known as Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital), Delhi.

Surinder alias 'gilli' had always been interested in the world of films. Good-looking and rather nattily dressed most of the time, he had always been attracted to showmanship. From his childhood that was spent at Lahore, then his introduction to running a cinema at Batala he discovered he could relate himself rather well with this business. That is the reason he decided to start with running the military cinema at Babina after the family had migrated from Lahore. Later, along with his uncle (Late Janki Nath Passey), he took over Laxmi Cinema at Jhansi that was so successful that the owner of the building decided not to renew the lease further and wanted to enter the trade himself! This was the phase when 'Krishna Cinema' came into being. Surinder is married to Kamla (Chaddha) and they have three sons: Arvind (married to Sangita Puri), Atul (married to Vinti Saggar), and Ashok (married to Madhu Kohli). Pushkin, Sumiran, Pavni, and Pushpak are his grandchildren.

Mohinder alias 'mhindi' had his eyes set on becoming a doctor. He completed his LSMF and then a bridge course from Gwalior to set his dream rolling. Later he also completed his MD. After having started his pro carreer from Irvin Hospital, New Delhi, he joined the HinduRao Hospital and remained there until his retirement a few years back. He was honoured by a Padamshree by the Govt. of India, and has also been the Physician to the President of India (then Giani Zail Singh). He married Pushp Lata (Mariam Abraham from Kerela) and has two children: Rajiv (married to Sarita Arora), and Ritu (married to Manu Jaggi). Rohan, Sumedha, and Siddanth are his grandchildren.

It is a small and happy family and we'll learn more about them later in some other page on the net!
